The Pursuit of Happiness

There are movies, books, and entire industries centered around the pursuit of happiness.  We look for it in consumerism, in psychology, and through the advice of doctors.  Yet the only person who can give to us enduring joy and happiness is Christ.  In the Bible we are given not only His words to man, His gospel message of rescue and His very love letter to our hearts, but an instruction manual on how to pursue and obtain happiness!  It is amazing to me that self-help books sell as predictably as diet pills, promising the same results, yet readers don’t seem to catch on that something is lacking.  While books are not bad in and of themselves, we don’t need hundreds of self-help books, but to experience and point others toward one glorious, superior book.  It is not self-help, it’s God’s help.  There are many things in life that may aid us in experiencing temporal vestments of happiness, but true, deep happiness is glorious, beautiful and indescribable.  Who wouldn’t want to experience true happiness?  We have the ability to every day, and we can learn how by spending time in God’s word.  Here are a few of the verses that have stuck out at me lately during my own scripture readings..

Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor. – Proverbs 21:21

Whoever loves a pure heart and gracious speech will have the king as a friend. – Proverbs 22:11

Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold. – Proverbs 22:1

Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm. – Proverbs 19:23

The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked come to nothing. – Proverbs 10:28

The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. – Proverbs 10:22

He fills my life with good things.  My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! – Psalm 103:5

Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s charater. – Pslam 105:19

“God is leading you away from danger, Job, to a place free from distress.  He is setting your table with the best food. – Job 36:16

If they listen and obey God, they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives.  All their years will be pleasant. – Job 36:11

All verses above are in the New Living Translation.
