What shall I do, Lord?

There are plenty of times in life when we don’t know what step to take next.  We want God to be our guide, but we’re not sure what to do while we wait to understand the next step in His plan.  How do we fill these times of what seems like silence from God?

These times remind me of a part in the Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.  In the film, there is a time when Aslan does not come right away to save everyone from what seems shall be disaster.  Some seem to think that Aslan has abandoned his people.  Will they have to fend for themselves?  Will the battles end in failure?  The thought seems frightening, and leads some creatures to seek powers other than Aslan’s might to help them get through their troubles.

This can be like us, thinking that silence from God means abandonment by the same, and often we may seek out the answer to our predicaments (our troubles, or perhaps even the more mundane confusion about where to go next in life) seperate from “Aslan”, or in a real life case, God.  Yet God has not forsaken us!  Instead, He continues to watch over us, and He will not allow our battles to end in failure, or our lives to lead just to dead-ends.  Sometimes He uses times of what seems like silence to mold us, grow us, lead us, and teach us dependence on Him and Him alone.  If we place all our faith and trust in Him, and seek Him despite the silence, He always pulls through for us, and never leaves us open to hopelessness.  Instead, He is our hope, and He fends for us (often at what seems like the last minute) to pull off a victory.

Sometimes God shows us what steps to take next when we are actively doing all we can in our present situations (just like a battle in Narnia).  You can’t just sit there and be depressed!  Instead, take charge of every opportunity in your available circumstances.  Use the resources God gives you, even when you don’t know what to pursue in the long-term.  God is capable of shutting doors that need to be shut, and sometimes you have to walk through a few doors that don’t make sense to get to a metaphorical room in life that God wants you to inhabit.

Don’t give up when the first door you open (or opportunity) doesn’t turn out to lead to where God is going to eventually put you!  If you can sense that He still has more unknown steps for you in the future, continue to prayerfully open doors, asking and “knocking”, and He will open for you the doors that ought to be open.  God never leaves nor forsakes those who truly run after Him and His promises.

Today when I was reading Passion Magazine’s blog, I spent some time listening to an embedded youtube video of Britt Nicole’s “Walk on Water” song.  The lyrics were moving, and pertinent to what I’ve said here (read below).

You look around, staring back at you
Another wave of doubt, will it pull you under? You wonder
What if I’m overtaken? What if I never make it?
What if no one’s there? Will You hear my prayer?

When you take that first step into the unknown
You know that He won’t let you go

So what are you waiting for? What do you have to lose?
Your insecurities, they try to hold to you
But you know you’re made for more, so don’t be afraid to move
Your faith is all it takes, and you can walk on the water, too

So get out, and let your fear fall to the ground
No time to waste, don’t wait, and don’t you turn around and miss out
Everything you were made for, I know you’re not sure
So you play it safe, you try to run away

If you take that first step into the unknown
He won’t let you go

So what are you waiting for? What do you have to lose?
Your insecurities, they try to hold to you
But you know you’re made for more, so don’t be afraid to move
Your faith is all it takes, and you can walk on the water, too

Step out, even when it’s storming
Step out, even when you’re broken
Step out, even when your heart is telling you
Telling you to give up

Step out, when your hope is stolen
Step out, you can’t see where you’re going
You don’t have to be afraid
So what are you waiting, what are you waiting for?

So what are you waiting for? What do you have to lose?
Your insecurities try to hold to you
You know you’re made for more, so don’t be afraid to move
Your faith is all it takes, and you can walk on the water
Walk on the water, too

– “Walk on the Water” (Britt Nicole)

Don’t let fear get grasp of your heart!  Follow after God even when it seems like there is silence from heaven, and as you faithfully make use of the opportunities near at hand in your present circumstances, at last when it seems like hope is something unheard of, you may hear the words, “Well done, my good and faithful friend” spoken to your heart.  Then the rewards of waiting on God will be made much more clear.  He is worthy of your trust; put your faith in Him and He will never let you down.
