Heroes and Heroines

When someone becomes famous, often one of the first things he or she is asked is, “what was your inspiration?” and, “who do you look up to?”.  Now even Facebook asks users this question- “who inspires you?”.  There are many people I’ve been inspired by, for numerous reasons, and of course family members and friends have had a large impact on my life as well.  There are also many other figures from history and the present whom I have been inspired by.  Some are well-known: others are more recent to enter the scene.  Following is a list of some of the individuals that have inspired me for some reason or other.

William Wilberforce – Wilberforce assisted in abolishing the British slave trade and was an outspoken man in Parliament.

Jim and Elizabeth Elliot – Jim Elliot was an incredible man who was killed by the Auca Indians, and his wife Elizabeth, now remarried, continues to write moving books.

C. S. Lewis – an inspiring writer, thinker and philosophizer.

Charles Spurgeon – another “thinker” and writer.

Jane Austen – a writer and witty moralist.

Abigail Adams – an amazing woman, through and through.

Alex and Brett Harris – two culture-changers of our generation.

Steven Furtick – a young culture-changer inspiring others to do the same.

Audrey Hepburn – an unusual actress as well as a UNICEF worker who danced ballet to help fund the Dutch resistance against the Nazis during World War II.

Jackie Evancho – a little girl who had a dream to sing, pursued it, practiced incessantly, and humbly and gracefully stepped into her dreams.

Mr. Faria – a teacher, musician, active community member and more.  This person gains the admiration of young people because he inspires them to pursue their dreams and has equipped many students to do just that.  He also gives a good example of how to live a meaningful life in one’s community by contributing the giving of one’s time and energy and genuinely caring about others.

My college Biology teacher – someone who truly cares about students and helps them to succeed.

This is just a handful of examples of those I am inspired by. Who are you inspired by?  Why?  Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts.

  1. C.S. Lewis and Jane Austen are awesome, and not just because they’re both INTJs. 😉

And I agree, teachers who truly care about their students can literally be life changing. They deserve special notice.

  2. Haha, they are. 😉

I love great teachers. There are some people who were just sort of /made/ for teaching. Great teachers truly are life-changing, because often a great teacher is not just a class-coach, but someone who gives you life-coaching as well. Someone who inspires you, guides you, or encourages you in the right direction. 🙂
